Eighteen gauge is a millimetre of wire, one step up from the 20G most nostrils start at, and people arrive at it from two directions. Some were pierced at 18G in the first place and have never worn anything else. Others started at 20G, found that a thin hoop went oval within a season of being opened and closed, and moved up to metal with more spine in it. Both are on this page, and both are buying the same thing: a piece that keeps its geometry.
The trade is comfort against durability, and it is small but real. A millimetre of wire is heavier in a nostril than eight tenths, and in a hoop you can feel the difference for a day or two. Against that, an 18G hinge still clicks after a year, an 18G horseshoe springs back to where it was, and an 18G post does not bend when a jumper catches it. If a hole made at 20G has stretched over the years, which happens quietly and without anyone deciding it, 18G is what stops a stud turning in it.

Can you put a DAILI 18G nose ring in a hole pierced at 20G?
Not by force. A 1.0 mm post in a 0.8 mm hole means stretching the channel, which is a thing done gradually and deliberately, not on a Tuesday evening with a new parcel. If the hole has widened on its own over the years the piece will go in easily; if it does not go in easily, it is the wrong gauge.
Why does a DAILI 18G hoop keep its shape better?
More metal in the wire means more resistance to being bent out of round. A hinged hoop is opened and closed by hand every time it goes in, and each of those movements works the metal a little. At 18G the ring comes back to where it was; at 20G it comes back nearly, and nearly adds up.
Is 18G used for anything other than a nostril?
Yes. It is a common cartilage gauge as well, so several pieces on this page name a helix or a conch alongside a nostril on their cards. A hoop of the right diameter can move between the two, and the diameter changes more than the gauge does.
