Steel on this site means 316L, and the L is the part that matters: it marks a low-carbon stainless alloy, the grade the trade uses for posts because it polishes hard, takes a mirror finish and shrugs off the salt in sweat. It is stiffer than titanium and about twice the weight at the same gauge. Stiffness is a virtue in the pieces that get worked: a horseshoe barbell that is opened and closed twice a week, a hinged hoop that has to click into the same notch a hundred times, a navel bar that follows a fold which moves all day.
Weight is the other half of the trade, and it decides where on the body steel makes sense. In a nostril or a navel, half a gram either way is nothing. In a stacked helix with three pieces in it, the same three in titanium sit lighter by the end of a day. The chains and bracelets on this page are stainless steel too, plated in 14K gold where they are sold in gold. What does 316L mean on a DAILI card?
A grade of stainless steel: chromium and nickel alloyed with a low carbon content, which is what the L stands for. It is the grade jewellery posts are normally made from because it polishes hard and resists corrosion from sweat. It is a specification of the metal, not a claim about skin.
Is DAILI surgical steel heavier than titanium?
About twice as heavy at the same gauge. That is unnoticeable in a nostril stud and noticeable in a stacked ear by the evening. Against it, steel is stiffer, so the horseshoes and hinged hoops that get opened often sit on this page rather than on the titanium one.
Does DAILI surgical steel contain nickel?
Stainless steels of this family contain nickel as part of the alloy; that is what makes them stainless. Whether a particular piece releases enough of it to matter for a particular person is not something a catalogue can answer, and we do not.
